Magazines are notoriously difficult to get rid of because you think you might need to read them…again…in the future. And, if you have several subscriptions, they can really pile up. As it turns out, they can actually be transformed into something new and functional.
Designer, Jens Praet, used shredded Elle Decor magazines to create furniture pieces, like a bench, table, and bookcase. His work is definitely a different take on recycling.
Have a look…

Who knew that a water bottle could be transformed into a pen? The folks at Pilot, that’s who. They’ve come up with a way to recycle those bottles and give them a new lease on life.
The B2P Bottle-to-Pen is a member of Piolt’s eco-friendly BeGreen line. All BeGreen products are made from 70% or more recycled materials. That percentage jumps to 89% for this pen.
Check it out:

…and here’s the Pilot Petball Ballpoint Pen. Like the B2P pen, it’s retractable, refillable, and made from recycled plastic bottles. They even look like a water bottles, don’t they?

I recently discovered a bed made of cardboard with underbed drawers and accompanying side table. The company behind these unique furniture pieces, Karton, also makes a few storage products as well, like:
TV Stand

Chest of Drawers

Shelving

Here’s a different twist on how to use a cardboard box. The boxes were transformed into stackable shelving by creator and minimalist, Dany Giles.

When you need to take a breather, this bench by Domingos Tótora would come in handy.

How about a bench and bookcase combo designed by Toby Horrocks?

And, when you feel like getting about town, try this bicycle created by Izhar Gafni. It’s not yet on the market, but is expected to cost $60-$90.

Did you have a skateboard when you were a kid? My brother did and he loved, it but when he got older, he gave it away. Donating is a great way to recycle them, but now, it’s possible to breathe new life into old skateboards in some very cool ways.
Skateboard as Jewelry
Lindsay Holmes of MapleXO is passionate about skateboarding and making sure that old boards don’t end up landfills. So, she turns them into jewelry. Here’s a look at some of her pieces:
Skateboard as iPhone Case
The iPhone Skateback came about from the partnership of Lindsay Holmes and the team at Grove. They’ve created an accessory used by just about everyone I know – an iPhone case. Each one is unique and has an adhesive that you can put directly on the back of your phone. And, it comes in three lovely colors: vibrant, calm, and neutral.
Skateboard as Wall Tile
The folks at Art of Board came up with the idea to create decorative tiles with old skateboards. Want to donate your old board? Visit i Ride to find drop off location in your area.
Skateboard as Art
Japanese artist Haroshi found his own way to recycle skateboards. He turned them into works of art.

…and Finnish designer Bjorn Holm turned them into surf boards.

Actually, this month’s transformer turns into a spoon AND a glass AND a candle holder. How’s that for triple duty?
The Pure-Bottle by Lucirmás is made from a recycled wine bottle that’s cut in two places giving it the ability to be three things all at once. The company, located in Barcelona, Spain, focuses on creating “sustainable glass products which tell a story.” Each piece is original and simple, yet functional, in design.
This 100% recycled bottle also comes in three different colors: brown, beige, and blue. Can you picture the Pure-Bottle on your dining or cafe table? Seems like it might be perfect for the beach or on a picnic. What do you think?

Did you know that wine bottles can be made into many different things? Here’s a look at their Prosecco votive holder called Nino.

Toothpick and votive holders…

Serving trays and salt and pepper shakers…

…and, my personal favorite, coat hooks and note holder. Genius! Click here to see the new mirrored version.

And you thought newspapers were just for reading…or gardening.
It turns out that they’re good for your butt, too. What you get when you mix a bit of flour (yes, the cooking kind) and finely shredded newspaper is a chair, a Paper Chair to be exact. It’s entirely eco-friendly. Expired flour is whipped into some sort of glue to hold those old newspapers together on a recycled foam frame.
So, who came up with the Recycle/Rechair and why? Designers Peter Plantan and Nusa Zupanc from Slovenia took on the challenge hosted by Architecture Workshop in Rome (AWR) and also took home first prize.
The chair has a funky, cool look, but I wonder how comfortable it really is? Nice concept, though, don’t you think?

I’m always amazed by all the creative things that can be made from regular, every day stuff. I found this series of art work, dubbed Freakshow Project, on Behance. Unlike some of the other transformers we’ve featured, these make use of another familiar feature – the human form.
Thoughts on this project?

I hate the end of summer. No more BBQ’s. It looks like midnight when it’s only 5:00 pm. And, it’s frigid. Bleh. Every year, I count the days until summer rolls back ’round again.
I’ve found something that will make me look forward to my favorite season – the Hot-Pot BBQ – a planter that turns into a grill. What a super combo! You can grow your own herbs and then use them on the grill. It’s logical. And, it makes me pine for the warmer temps even more.
A few more pluses: It looks good. It’s great for small spaces. And, it’s relatively inexpensive ($124). What do you think? Thumbs up or down?

I soooo wish this new find was already on the market, but sadly, it’s not. It’s called Hampered Seating by Lunar. Basically, you throw your dirty laundry in it, and when it’s full, you sit in it.
It’s an interesting concept and I wonder if it would really work well as seating. It could be a nice conversation starter, though…but then that would mean inviting people into your bedroom or leaving the chair in your living room.
Check it out and let me know if you would use this transformer.

The Mealbox is one super clever transformer. It will come in handy when you need extra seating on a nice spring or summer day. And, because it starts out as a puzzle in a box, it’s easy to store. If you have a small space and big eating plans, Mealbox is for you.
