Thursdays are normally reserved for guest authors, but today, we’re shaking things up a bit with a post for new parents out there. Check out the first five items in our top ten list of “must-have” baby gear.

With a myriad of things to choose from (as well as advice from just about every person you know), new parents can end up buying a lot of things for their new bundle of joy…many of which can go unused. So, I’ve compiled a list of ten things (and sharing the first five here) that you should consider getting.

So, what’s on my list? Well, let me start by telling you what’s not on it. I know you already know that your baby needs a safe place to sleep as well as diapers and wipes (and maybe diaper cream, too), so you won’t find those on my list. You’ve also probably already heard that you must have a car seat to transport your little person from the hospital to your home. And, I’m sure that you probably have a few outfits already picked out and a way of feeding your little person.

So, while my list has a few items that might have already been on your radar, I’m just making sure they stay there because they really do help.

1. Puj Tub

When it’s time for that first bath, the Puj will be a very comfortable place for your baby. It has magnetic closures so that when it’s folded, it stays that way. When bath time is over, it can be stored flat or hung behind a door or on a hook inside the shower. It’s made from a soft foam that will be gentle on your baby’s skin. It’s perfect for use at home or when you’re traveling. Pick up super soft sea sponge (instead of a regular wash cloth) to along with your new tub.

2. Nosefrieda

Little noses sometimes need a little help and when they do, you’ll need an aspirator that actually fits (bulb aspirators can sometimes be too big). This baby gizmo was designed by an ear, nose and throat specialist. I think they should also get a pat on the back for a very unique name. Keep Nosefrieda close to your baby’s grooming kit as you may need both of them often.

3. Pack n Play Playard

A Pack n Play can be very helpful, particularly if you will be spending a lot of your time in a specific room or if you live in a smaller home. Everything you’d need – a changing table and a bassinet – would be in one convenient location. And, this item will grow with your baby. When you no longer need the changing table and bassinet, simply remove them and use the play yard.

4. Burp Cloths

Yes, you really do need these during feeding times. The key is getting the right type. Flannel burp cloths are great because they tend to hold up well to whatever is thrown at them, and are wide enough to cover your shoulder. This means no drips or spills on your favorite shirt.

5.  Car mirror

Putting your baby in a rear facing car seat in the of your vehicle is the safest place for him be. Unfortunately, that presents a problem: you won’t be able to see your precious cargo. By using a shatter-resistant mirror, you can see him without having to pull over to make sure he’s ok.
