Quick Tip: Create an Inventory of Everything in Your Home

Today’s advice is quick but the process will need to happen over time.  You should consider creating a household inventory to help you if you experience loss of or damage to items in your home (e.g. burglary, natural disaster, water damage, etc.).

Take a few minutes every day to add items to your inventory list and involve family members, when possible.  If there are four people in the family (old enough to participate) and you each spend 15 minutes working on the inventory, that’s 1 hour of collective time.  This will be time well spent.  It’s a lot easier to refer to a list than to try to rely on your memory, especially when you’re feeling stressed.

Check with your insurance agent/company to see if they have a form that you can use.  My policy is with Erie and they offer a very comprehensive checklist. Click here to see it.

That’s an excellent idea. I always intended to create a home inventory but I have never got around to it. You really have to develop a time and just do it.

Hi Marie: I know, we never seem to have enough time to do all the things we need to do. =) …but if you spend a few minutes/day adding items to your list, it will be done in no time. Does your insurance company offer a pre-printed form or will you be using a spreadsheet?
