The Toiletries Taker

The new NBC program, The Marriage Ref, takes a peek at the differences between spouses.  Here’s the premise… There’s a long standing argument between man and wife....

It’s presented to comedian Tom Papa (host & referee) and a panel of three celebrities.  The celebs weigh in and tell Tom if they’re for the husband or the wife.  Tom then “makes the call” and declares a winner.  Fight’s over and everybody’s happy…at least, that’s what the audience sees.  Did I mention that Jerry Seinfeld is a producer?

On a recent episode, the wife was none too pleased with her husband, the “toiletries taker.” He likes to take the little bottles of shampoo and lotions whenever they go to hotels.  Here’s how he describes it:

“I know I’m doing the right thing, I’m saving,” he explains. “Everybody needs this stuff. I get a rush, I can’t explain it.  Our kids will need it. Our family will need it.”

His wife, on the other hand, begs to differ (though she admits to taking hotel shower caps).  Not only does he collect them, but he stores them very neatly by category in the bathroom.

Does this sound familiar? Do you stockpile hotel toiletries or the GWP’s (gifts with purchase) from department stores?  Tell us why, or is the obvious answer because they’re free?  Where do you keep them, and most importantly, will you use them ALL?

If you’re curious about what Sam Cohen did with his toiletries treasure after the show, check out the video below. Btw, were any of you surprised that it was the husband that was the toiletries taker?  I was…

Does some of the time count? I only take the ones I really like. I know some folks who hoard them (hide from housekeeping so they will get new ones when they haven’t used all of they have) and also folks who raid the housekeeper’s cart. I like the small bottles of lotion because they are good for the plane (fit in my 3-1-1 bag) and they are ideal size for the car.

I find them in clients home often. I encourage them to donate the unopened bottles to a shelter. At least there I know they are being put to use. It’s a funny thing… Great post. Thanks Deb!

Well, nothing is really free, it contributes to the high price of hotel rooms. The only real good reason to take them is if they dump everything after each guest, so you wouldn’t be letting them go to waste.

@Satya: The hotel does eat the cost when we take the shampoos and lotions. I learned from watching The Marriage Ref that they actually don’t mind when we take their toiletries because the cost minimal, and they’d rather we take them and have a good experience. Good experience = we’ll come back and spend much more than a bottle of shampoo. Always good to hear from you, Satya. =)

@Kim: I think it’s fine to take them sometimes, especially if they fit nicely in your Butler bag. =) On the other hand, swiping them from the housekeeping cart or hiding them to get more, well, I’m not sure that’s the way to go. I tend to find a lot of GWP’s at clients’ homes. Ironically, many clients seem to find it really difficult to let go of them, even more so than hotel toiletries. Interesting, don’t you think? Thanks for leaving a comment!

Here’s a great and useful idea for hotel toiletries. How about starting a ‘toiletries’ drive in your neighborhood. Collect all the shampoo and soap for 3-6 months and then donate them to a homeless shelter.

A toiletries drive is wonderful idea! I love that you can help others while helping yourself get rid of unused items. Thanks, Jim. =)
