I can hardly believe it! It’s been a year (almost) since my first blog post. Wow. Would you believe that I didn’t really have any interest in blogging a few years ago?
I thought it was pointless. And ruthless. I remember hearing about bloggers who would trash the people and subjects they talked about. I didn’t want to be “one of them.” How things have changed. There’s so much helpful, funny, interesting, and weird stuff that bloggers share. And, lots of us do it in a nice way, too. =)
Wanna know what my first post was? On September 2, 2008, I published “Top Five Organizing Tips.” I didn’t even include a picture! Wow. Now, I’m uploading videos to You Tube. Hmmm…not sure that I had any ads back then…
I’m tickled pink that I’m still blogging and still have lots to talk about. So, stick around throughout the month of September. I’ll have giveaways to celebrate and may even update an old post or two. There will also be a few guest bloggers sharing their two cents.
A whole year. Wow.

On Monday night, a group of professional organizers on Twitter (along with others) tuned in to the A&E program, Hoarders. As I mentioned in the previous post, hoarding is a mental illness, a disorder that stops people from discarding things that you or I may dispose of easily. I have to be honest, even as a professional who has worked with hoarders, it was a difficult program to watch, in part, because of the extreme condition of the homes that were profiled. Another realization: I have a new found admiration for organizers that work with this population…and I have confirmed for myself that I cannot do the same. I would have had an especially difficult time working with Jill, the food hoarder.
It was interesting to see the comments that were generated in reaction to the show. A few people expressed horror, outrage, and harshness towards Jennifer/Ron and Jill and their struggle to part with their belongings.
Here’s one organizer’s response to those comments…
OrganizeAtlanta Why do people feel they can be meaner than hell . #hoarders have issues and you do too
…a few intriguing questions came up…
ocdgirl2000 Is there a connection between #hoarders and antique dealers?when does one cross the line?how does one start to scale down from the business?
joygreenmcgann @siditty @chloebeetle Do these ppl have family? Friends? Anyone? If so, how could they watch this happen?
JaniceSimon #hoarders Do you think the food hoarding woman ever gets food poisoning?
LisaMontanaro @LivingOrderSA Interesting question about #hoarders often having cats? Any studies on that?

It turns out that there is a study that links cats to mental illness (though not to hoarding)…click on the tiny url below to read more about the study.
LivingOrderSA Study on cats linked to mental illness http://tinyurl.com/79c8n but not the study on connection to #hoarders

**Note: Hoarding is a disorder, not a choice. If you struggle with hoarding or know someone who does, visit the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD) to get more information. Also, take a look at Hoarders: a new show at Unclutterer.com for more resources.

A week ago, I heard about a new way to bank on Twitter (where else would I get breaking news?). With all the things we have to do in a given day, stopping off at the bank to make a deposit is just one more thing on our “to do” list.
Well, what if you could make the deposit at home…or at the beach…on your phone…sorry, iPhone. I’m a big BlackBerry fan, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to find out more.
It turns out that USAA, a privately held bank and insurance company, will soon offer this option to users with their app for iPhone. They would require customers to photograph both sides of the check with their phone’s camera. Basically, by sending the bank an image of the check, the customer sends it to the bank and it arrives just as any typical check would. The good news: you won’t have to mail the the original check. The whole process will be done electronically.
“Mobile is going to be a bigger part of how people do commerce and how they interact with their financial institutions. The great value that we see is the time savings.” ~Wayne Peacock, a USAA Executive VP
Ok, so does this sound fantastic and super efficient to you? …or are you ok with driving to the bank and doing it the old fashioned way? Take picture…drive to the bank…take picture…drive to the bank…hmmm…
What say you? Need more info? Check out this video…

Starting tonight, A&E will air the series, Hoarders. Each episode is described as “a fascinating look inside the lives of two different people whose inability to part with their belongings is so out of control that they are on the verge of a personal crisis.” Though hoarding may seem like an issue of just “too much stuff,” it’s much more than that. It is a disorder that can hold a person hostage in their own home.
Fortunately, it’s not hopeless. There are many hoarders who work with professional organizers and therapists to get out from under the mountain of things they have held on to. Last Friday, the Today show interviewed Jennifer Miller, a mother of three, who got help from professional organizer, Geralin Thomas. Jennifer’s life isn’t perfect, but as she said, “we’re towing the line.” Tune in A&E tonight at 10/9 Central, especially if you have a hoarder in your life. If nothing else, it will give you some insight into their struggles.
