Jaime’s Jems: One True Media

otm20logoHappy Monday!  As a way to try to pass on something useful to anyone taking the time to actually read my blogs, I am coining Mondays as the day to find “Jaime’s Jems”.  What’s a “Jem” you ask?  Anything out in cyberspace that I find particularly helpful (or just cool and interesting) in my day to day functions.

I was just asked today how I stay current in what’s new out in cyberspace, and to be honest, it’s a combination of having a husband who is very knowledgeable in all things technical (a geek, some may say), and spending way more time than I probably should on my computer!

My first “Jem” is a site called One True Media.  I had used it quite some time ago, and had forgotten about it, until just this morning.  I had a large grouping of photos of the kids that I wanted to share with my mother-in-law, and rather than upload the pictures and send them through Shutterfly or Snapfish (both sites I do use often), I thought I’d get a little more creative.

At One True Media, I can upload my pictures right from my computer, add effects and music, and make a video montage to share, for free.  If you want to add additional effects and features, or have it transferred onto a CD, you can do so, for a fee.  It’s a super user-friendly site, and it seriously took me about 15 minutes to create a cute, musical picture presentation of the grandkids to share with Nana, from a distance!  Check it out!

Finding the Balance

On March 23, 2009, in Time Management, by Jaime Maerz, Mommy Blogger

justice scaleI have been really busy the last few weeks, hence the lack of blog action on my part.  We’ve had some illnesses hit our house and make the rounds again, which always takes a toll on everyone.  In addition, just getting caught up in the day to day functions can get crazy, and before you know it, time has slipped away.  But I’m back, and I’ve got something on my mind!

I’ve been thinking a lot about balance lately.  Maybe it’s because I am a parent now, with many more responsibilities, or maybe it’s just the change in our society in general, but it seems like people are so much busier now than they ever were before.  Everyone is constantly multitasking, rushing their kids from one practice to another, scheduling meetings and playdates, attached to their pda’s and blackberries, causing accidents while driving and talking on their cell phones, or just looking like crazy people in general, as they walk down the street talking on invisible headsets – c’mon you know what I am talking about!  How many times have you seen someone alone, talking out loud, and ask yourself, “Did that person just say something to me, or are they talking to themselves?”  Or perhaps YOU are that crazy person.  It’s okay, rest assured, you’re not alone.  But at what point is all this business and multitasking necessary, and at what point can you just put it on hold?  This is a question I ask myself often, as a parent, “How do I find the balance?”

I can admit that I am just as bad as the people I mentioned above, consumed with technology pulling me in one direction, household chores in another, and my family in another.  Twisted like a pretzel, let me just say I have become very flexible over the years.  Even without having a job outside the house, it seems finding the balance is something I struggle with daily.  When I decided to stay home to raise my kids, that became my full time “job.”  Though as with any other job, there are day to day responsibilities that also need to be tended to.  I wish I could engage my kids every second of the day, and often feel guilty when I don’t, but that is just not realistic, or healthy. Trying to teach independence, without dismissing my children and without feeling guilty, is definitely a challenge.  But it’s times when my son will say, “Can someone pleeeeeeeaaase play with me?,” that I have to stop and ask myself, is my little smartie hitting me hard with guilt, or can this load of laundry wait while we have a quick game of checkers? Or another way to ask it, “Do you want clean underwear, or do you want to play a game?” (no doubt my son would choose the latter if faced with that question!).  The ideal solution to this dilemma is to say to him, “Okay, let’s play the game, then you can help me with the laundry!”  Wow, now there’s a concept!  Unfortunately, it’s not always this cut and dry.

It was just this weekend where I sat down with my husband, feeling somewhat defeated as a parent, and decided I needed to make some changes here.  Before having children of my own, I worked in the child care industry, successfully managing several different programs for many years, so clearly I could do this!  I think!  Well, I brought myself back to all the experience I have gained over the years, and the light bulb went off…to find the balance, you have create one.  I am a firm believer of setting realistic expectations, so that is what I am going to do!  The first step is to sit down with my oldest son and create a daily schedule.  We sort of had one at one time, but somewhere, for some reason, we lost it, and looking back, losing that structure was when we started to lose the balance, and me, part of my mind.  We will re-establish the times and things we are going to do together, as well as the times for independent play, where Mommy can get stuff done, (and as an added bonus, helping Mommy with tasks earns more stickers on the sticker chart – woo hoo!).  Knowing what is coming next, I hope will alleviate the “boredom” that can wander about the house, as well as keep myself on task.  Knowing I have an allotted time to pay bills or clean the kitchen, for example, will help me use that time more efficiently, instead of checking in with Facebook, just for a minute!  It should also add to the quality of the time spent with my kids.  If I have certain times to get my “stuff” done, I won’t be constantly thinking about all the stuff I have to do in between turns at Monopoly Junior.

I can’t say for sure that this plan of mine will work, especially with 2 children at totally different stages, but it has worked for us in the past and I have high hopes this time around.  At any rate, I am certainly willing to give it a try.  Do you struggle with balance in your life, and if so, how do YOU manage it?  Please share with the rest of the class, kids!

With a great weekend behind me, what better way to start my week than by being interviewed by my friend and WUSA9 journalist, Lindsey Mastis! Today, Lindsey featured me in a story about women who love to clean. Now, cleaning is not organizing but they do go hand in hand…and guess who likes to clean? Remember my post on a few months back about my cleaning frenzy?

Weekend Wrap Up: Jewish Women and Strange Super Heroes

What a busy weekend!  I helped a client in Accokeek, MD redesign her dining and living rooms on Saturday and manned a booth at the “Celebrating the Jewish Woman” event  at the Hilton in Silver Spring, MD today.  This was a small event hosted by Chabad of Silver Spring with a handful vendors (well, maybe a handful and a half), including an acupuncturist who offered mini sessions.   There was also someone there “plucking” the women’s eyebrows with thread!  I, of course, doled out tips on how to organize various areas of their homes and cars, and the Arbonne (skin care) representative turned out to be a former professional organizer.  Small world, huh?

The entire event culminated in a very tasty lunch and a keynote entitled “From Showbiz to Shabbat” by former NBC producer, Molly Resnick, who had us all in stitches.  This was really a celebration of Jewish women and their heritage, and it seemed that everyone had a good time.  When you think about it, any woman would enjoy an event focused completely on her well being and that provided great food, no?  It’s definitely a great concept.  So, if there’s anyone out there who wants me to help them organize an “I’m Every Woman” event, call me! =)

Now, this far surpasses the way I started my weekend.  I saw Watchmen, a very strange movie where the super heroes are, well, strange.  One might argue that these types of characters are odd by nature but this was a little too odd for me, especially the blue guy who walked around sans clothing for 90% of the movie. =/   What happened to the days of  “regular” super heroes like  Superwoman?  …thought I was gonna say SuperMAN, didn’t ya? =)

Anyway, I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!

Fact Friday: Productivity & Multitasking

I have all these facts in my brain that I feel I MUST share!  Actually, while I have a whole lot of stuff floating around my head, random facts or even organizing tidbits don’t always hang around for very long.  None the less, I’m intrigued by stats I come across and I’ve decided to share some “did you know?” information with you on Fridays.  I find them interesting and thought you might, too.  Who knows, they might even motivate you to bring more order into your life.

So, here’s the first edition of “Fact Friday.”

“Workers’ productivity decreases by 20%-40%
every time they multitask or “task switch.”

Please share your own “did you know?” info because inquiring minds always want to know!  Just be sure to list your source, and keep in mind that Wikipedia is publicly updated – meaning that anyone can edit it – so it’s not always recognized as legit in some circles.

That said, have a FABULOUS weekend!  (for some reason, FABULOUS is my word of the week!)

creativememoriesGot pictures?  Who doesn’t, right?  If you’re like some of my clients, you probably don’t have the time to organize all those photos and put them in some sort of order.  Well,  help is on the way.  Today, I spoke to Cynthia Simmons, a Creative Memories consultant, who told me about a great event that’s  happening this weekend.  The Charles County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting “Shop, Crop, Scrap, Stamp!” Yep, just bring your photos (in bags, boxes, envelopes…you get the idea) and walk out with beautifully displayed memories.  They even provide child care for a small fee for children who are potty trained.

That was the good news.  The bad news is that the registration deadline was March 5th.  Don’t shoot the messenger, but since the deadline has passed, there’s a $10 late registration fee in addition to the attendance fee.  Sorry, but I just found out today.  Anyway,  see below for all the details and don’t forget to send me some pictures of your new scrapbook.

FUNctional Spaces ~ Update

On March 9, 2009, in Time Management, by Jaime Maerz, Mommy Blogger

elmoIt’s been a whole week since I invited you to join me in organizing your children’s “stuff” and creating a FUNctional space for them to play. How’s it going? Over the course of this past week I can report back that I have been both productive and side-tracked, which is quite typical in my life as a mom. Have I completed the initial steps I talked about in my previous post, FUNctional Spaces ~ Getting Started? Yes. However, in doing so I created a whole additional project to tackle. One step forward two steps back. Perhaps I was a tad overambitious. Here’s what happened……

I managed to complete the “clean sweep” of the kid’s playroom. What I learned from this was that it was definitely a good idea not to toss the belongings out on the lawn, especially with the recent snow we experienced this past week. I also found it does not work to try to complete this task with children “helping” you. Twenty minutes into this project, my youngest was merging all the piles I had established, and was having no part of any “purge” that was about to take place. Forget that Elmo was missing limbs, “Melmo” was part of the family and was clearly staying! So, from that moment I knew this was a project to be embarked upon during nap time, and nap time proved to be extremely productive! I managed to toss what needed to be tossed, create several boxes to donate and send to Grandmom’s (as brilliantly suggested by a reader) and keep the items that needed to be kept. Additionally, I managed to find a home for some items an expecting mom to twins was in need of, and even schedule a pick-up with the Purple Heart for later this month. Now that’s what I call a successful week!

My shortcomings came when I became a bit overambitious. Wait, let me retract that statement and keep it real, it was a pure case of getting side tracked and sucked into the nostalgia of it all – the exact thing I warned about. The task at hand was about going through the children’s toys, but in doing so I came across some old children’s clothing. At this point I thought, why not go through all the clothing as well, and this is was where it spiraled out of control. My husband always teases me about my boys’ wardrobes, and it wasn’t until seeing the obscene amount of baby clothing I actually had, that lead me to almost think he has a point. I said almost! It also confirmed to me why we need to stop at two children, because in the slim chance we’d have a girl, I most definitely would need some type of support group, for all the precious little diva outfits that would no doubt feed my shopping addiction. But I digress. Going through the boxes, thinking it was only yesterday that my boys were that little, completely derailed my focus. While this is a project that also needs to be tackled, I really needed to FINISH the first project, before delving into this one.

So where do I go from here, now that I have boxes scattered all over the house of these adorable little outfits, that will never again be worn by my fast growing boys? I have decided I need to curb this project for the time being – put the items back in the boxes on the shelves and save it for a later date. Then, it’s time to continue creating the FUNctional space that was the primary focus of this exercise. And what’s the next step in establishing this space? Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned to see where we go from here……
