To Buy or Not To Buy

Recently, Krista Colvin, a professional organizer I met on Twitter, blogged about “scaling back” in her post, When The Diva Downsizes. It seems that with all the economic turmoil, lots of us are being more careful about our spending. This might sound dismal, but is it really? If we are more careful about how we spend and actually purchase fewer things, is that really so bad? The less stuff we have, the less we have to put away and the less clutter builds up. Sounds good, right?

But what about the “non-thing” stuff that make us happy? Like a grande one pump vanilla soy latte that the nice folks at Starbucks make oh so well? What about things that are good for us like organic food and our gym memberships…our doctor’s visits? Even manicures, pedicures, and massages help to us to relax and reduce stress. Should they get the ax, too?

What do you think? How are you cutting back?

P.S. Stay tuned… In my next post, I’ll let you know what I’ve cut out and the things that are really hard for me to live without.

I think when it comes to drinks and lattes, folks should drink more water. ;-) And on a broader scale, not live beyond their means. I say create a secondary account where you save for luxury items, including lattes, by putting away very small sums of money over time. And never contribute more to that account than a set amount of change each month. If your luxury account cannot afford a purchase, no latte or other.

You can always substitute little pleasure. Instead of going to the gym, you could run out in the streets. Instead of going for expensive foods, you could make yourself some juice combo’s etc.

It’s not the same, but maybe it’s time to also discover new passions :)

Anonymous: Yes, drinking more water is probably a good thing. =) I like the idea of having a 2nd account for “little luxuries.” Great tip!

Jure: That’s great advice. Instead of giving up something that’s good for us, find a different (less expensive way) to get the same or similar results. Not looking forward to running/walking outside if it rains, though.

Thanks for the shout out to my post “when the diva downsizes”! I haven’t given up lattes-just can’t do it…but I have slowed down on how often I imbide.

Basically I’m listening more that little voice (mine happens to be my mothers ;) ) in my head that suggests I don’t over spend.
